Pochettino breaks silence on why he dropped Nkunku to the bench

Pochettino provides an explanation for his decision to sit Nkunku against Luton Town.

As Chelsea looks to climb the Premier League standings, Mauricio Pochettino has said that there would be more switching around in his starting lineup.

In his four-man lineup from the Wednesday night 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, the Argentine benched Christopher Nkunku for the match against Luton Town.

Due to a slight injury, Benoit Badiashile was also unable to go to Kenilworth Road. Ian Maatsen and Mykhailo Mudryk were both left off of the starting lineup.

Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke, and Armando Broja were all brought back to the starting lineup on Saturday afternoon after missing the home victory over Palace due to a ban.

Before kickoff, Pochetino gave TNT Sport the following explanation when asked why he had reorganised his team: “I think it’s to manage the form of the player.”

“Thiago [Silva] is a skilled player who is more of a help in this kind of game.

“We need to add new players to the team during a busy time, so we need to give all the players opportunities.”

We’re constantly wanting to win the game and thinking about the here and now, which I believe will make us competitive.

“I believe that given the current situation, every player needs to believe that they can contribute, whether by starting or substituting for a position.

“We are definitely prepared, and there will be a lot of changes in the next few games,”

Ultimately, Madueke and Palmer proved to be Chelsea’s match winners against Luton, scoring all three goals at Kenilworth Road, indicating that Pochettino’s modifications had some success.
